Another long running TV show, this time a British soapie that has been on Australian screens for over 50 years.

Over the years it has moved timeslots. At its peak in the 60’s, it was prime time Australian television, specially for many ten-pound POMS in Australia as it was a reminder of home (if you were a Northerner).

Not unlike Neighbours and Home and Away is for British viewers today, a slice of another world. Back then, Australian’s got to watch every day Brit’s in their day to day lives.

The show has remained solid in the UK still being shown daily. In Australia, it ended up on Channel 72 during the day, followed by a small but passionate group of viewers who never miss an episode. Now Seven has decided to terminate it.

As with other shows, falling viewer numbers means fewer advertisers, = falling revenue. If there are not have enough advertisers, it means the cost of the show becomes unviable and they cease broadcasting. The show costs more than it can recoup in advertising revenue.

The trend appears to be the “age” of the viewer, predominantly older viewers. It may be older viewers do not attract the right type of advertiser. Interestingly, we’ve seen a lot of feedback from older viewers complaining about advertising. In general they don’t like advertising and they don’t mind expressing their opinion on it.

A Place To Call Home

Coronation Street

Next?

Interestingly, at the time of post there was no mention of it on the SEVEN web site.

It feels like all we ever do is write about the end of another TV series.
